ASHLEE PITMAN: Bio I am native of Greenville, South Carolina where I began dancing at the age of 5. I graduated in 2007 from Columbia College with a B.F.A in Performance & Choreography and a B.A in Dance Education certified K-12. I have studied under master teachers from the International Ballet Academy, Central Florida Ballet School, Columbia Ballet School, and many other master teachers from New York and Los Angeles. I have also had the opportunity to perform in numerous shows such as the Miss South Carolina Pageant, Florida Citrus Bowl Half Time Show, Star Systems Television Show, and most recently as a dancer/swing for the Walt Disney World Co. in Orlando, Florida. My choreography has been showcased at the South Carolina Dance Association’s Kaleidoscope, The American College Dance Festival, and other venues throughout South Carolina. I will serve as President for 2012-2013 year for the South Carolina Dance Association, and is a member of the South Carolina Dance Education Organization. This will be my 3rd year at SOA, and I am super excited about all the new adventures taking place this year!
Classroom Reflection:
Through the digital story telling class, I have become more comfortable with using multimedia, especially moviemaker. I feel I will be able to implement this type of work in my classroom; specifically in my Dance Repertory 3 class and Physical Conditioning class. Both classes are high school level.
In my Repertory 3 class, I will use moviemaker as a means to introduce materials to my students, and have my students use moviemaker as a means to learn material by creating their own digital stories based on modern dance history and artists. The students can research the material, and then tell the story of the artist or historical facts in a creative way through moviemaker. Through this process they are able to learn, and reconstruct the information through a creative process.
In my physical conditioning class, I will be able to implement moviemaker as part of their final exam. The students will be required to storyboard and create their own yoga video that can be shown to other classes as a mean of physical fitness. The students will have to find images of the movements, or videotape themselves demonstrating the movements to create their own digital story. The students will have to select music, narrate, and create a professional looking video that can be used year after year.
I feel, as teachers, it is important for us to begin and continue to use technology in the classroom. In a society that is becoming more and more technologically advanced, it is a universal language that all students now speak and understand. The day of the pen and paper are out, and the use of the internet and media sources is in. Not only does the use of programs like moviemaker create a new way of presenting, assessing student knowledge and learning material, but it allows students an opportunity to use a new universal language.
